What are the historical roots of acupuncture?
Acupuncture was born out of the Asian, Taoist tradition dating back over 8000 years. During that era people meditated and observed the energy flow within their bodies and envisioned their interconnectedness with nature and the universe. The Yin-Yang image came out of this philosophy, representing the two major forces of nature, creation and reception. The interdependence and co-evolution of these forces is symbolic of our search for balance. Over the following few thousand years the dualistic philosophy transformed to include Five Element theory, Zang-Fu organ systems, and the intricate network of the meridian system.
It has been theorized that Chinese medicine and the Indian science of Ayurveda actually came from the same source. Spiritually enlightened Sages created and spread this knowledge along the great "silk road" between China and India. A deep look into the history of Chinese Medicine will reveal a distinction between "Classical" Chinese medicine, which has more similarities to Ayurveda, and "Traditional" Chinese medicine (TCM). The latter was born out of the Cultural Revolution in China, after Mao Zedongs abolishment of traditional medicine in the 1950s. TCM is a product of Western or "Modern" medicines influence on Asian culture, creating more of a clinical than spiritual approach to medicine. Dr. Mota received her Masters degree in TCM but also has advanced training in the classical form of Chinese medicine, as well as Ayurveda. She applies these many different techniques and styles in her acupuncture practice.
How does acupuncture work?
The philosophy of Chinese Medicine focuses on the self-healing mechanism in the body. Qi is the underlying energy of life. It flows throughout the body along meridians. Unimpeded energy flow, or qi, maintains health, while stagnation leads to disease. Acupuncture needles and pressure can affect points along these meridians to restore the flow of energy. Many techniques are used to establish a diagnosis for acupuncture treatment including: observation, medical history, abdominal and facial reading, as well as meridian, pulse, and tongue diagnosis. Using this data, the practitioner can design an acupuncture treatment plan that, often combined with herbal remedies, can restore ones health in a safe, natural way that does not cause side effects.
